What “like-for-like” actually means

Web projects are hard to compare. Two quotes can look $6,000 apart and be describing completely different pieces of work. Here is what we check, line by line.

Custom design vs. template A purchased theme with your logo dropped in is a fraction of the cost of a designed site — and it looks like every other site using it.

Number of unique page designs “10 pages” can mean 10 designed layouts, or 2 layouts repeated 5 times.

Who writes the content Copywriting is often quoted out and quietly left to you.

Revision rounds included Two rounds, unlimited, or “changes billed hourly” are three different products.

Responsive + accessibility Whether the build is properly tested across devices and meets accessibility basics, or just “works on mobile”.

SEO foundations Schema markup, meta structure, sitemap, Search Console setup — or none of it.

Performance standard Whether anyone is accountable for how fast it loads after launch.

Hosting arrangements Whether hosting is bundled into the build price or billed separately — and where it sits, who holds the account, and what happens at renewal.

Send us a genuine, currently valid, itemised written quote for the design and build of your website, from an Australian business with an ABN that's registered for GST. If it covers substantially the same work as ours, we'll beat the ex-GST price for that matched scope by 5%. Hosting and ongoing care aren't included. Claim before you accept our proposal. We'll answer in writing within two business days — and if we can't beat it, we'll tell you why and give you the comparison anyway.

Before you ask

What counts as a “genuine” quote?

A formal written quote or proposal issued to you by an Australian business, showing their ABN, dated within the last 30 days, still valid, and itemising what's included. A price on a website, a verbal figure, a marketplace listing or a screenshot of a package page isn't a quote.

What does “like-for-like” mean?

The other quote covers substantially the same work as ours — same deliverables, same standard of build, comparable support and ownership terms. We'll set out the comparison in writing so you can see how we've assessed it.

Is the 5% off their price or yours?

Theirs. We take the ex-GST total for the matched scope on their quote and come in 5% below it.

What if you can't match it?

We tell you, in writing, with the reason. Sometimes a quote is cheaper because it's a genuinely smaller piece of work; sometimes it's below what it costs us to deliver properly, and we'd rather say so than take the job and cut corners. You keep the comparison either way.

When do I need to claim?

Before you accept our proposal and before any deposit is paid. We can't apply it retrospectively.

Does it apply to hosting or website care plans?

No. The guarantee covers the design and build of your website. If the other quote bundles hosting or ongoing care into its price, we'll take those out before we compare — and quote you separately for them at our standard rates, so you can see exactly what each part costs.

Do you need to contact the other company?

Only if we need to verify the quote, and only with your written permission first.
